A Shared Research Agenda on Just Green Transitions in the Western Balkans

Just Green Transitions have emerged as a key topic in both policy discussions and academic research. The move toward carbon-neutral technologies holds significant implications for societies, economies, and governance systems across the Western Balkans. However, the socioeconomic challenges and opportunities that accompany this transition are not uniform across the region. Their impacts vary widely among countries, communities, and societal groups.

Successfully navigating a just green transition requires dynamic and inclusive collaboration between policymakers, sectors, researchers, and other stakeholders. This cooperation must take place across all levelsโ€”transnational, national, regional, and local.

In this context, the Shared Research Agenda on Just Green Transitions in the Western Balkans was co-created by consortium partners of the GreenFORCE project, funded by Horizon Europe. The Agenda is designed to guide GreenFORCE partner organizations in shaping their short-, medium-, and long-term research collaborations. It also serves as a resource to strengthen research networks and partnerships across the region.

The publication aims to promote scientific excellence and innovation in support of the Western Balkansโ€™ green transition. It underscores the crucial role of academia and research institutions in advancing Just Green Transitions, by identifying future research needs and data requirements aligned with the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans (2021โ€“2030) and its Action Plan.

Ultimately, the shared research agenda aims to bridge the gap between policy and research, by ensuring the development of policy relevant research which can contribute new knowledge, evidence, ideas, and best practices directly to Just Green Transition policymaking processes.
